When Should an Infant or Child Have Their First Eye Exam?

An infant should have a complete eye exam with a kids’ eye doctor by six (6) months. As pediatric optometrists, we are trained to do the special developmental testing that can detect and treat early childhood eye disease or developmental vision problems, such as amblyopia, strabismus, anisometropia and/or visual-motor delays.

Developmental Vision problems or eye health problems are easier to correct if treatment begins early. An eye screening by a pediatrician does not adequately test for visual developmental deficits, refractive errors

What’s the Recommended Developmental Schedule for Children’s Eye Exams?

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that pre-school children receive a complete vision exam at the ages of six months, three years and five years.  It is particularly important that a child have a complete evaluation in the summer prior to entry into Kindergarten.  While in school, yearly evaluations are recommended.
